The Leisure Set – Members only
As a child, I imagined that one day technology would give rise to what was referred to at the time as the Leisure Age.
Automation / robotics would free up mankind to pursue higher endeavours primarily because everyone had more free time.
It now appears that the Leisure Age is here but not quite in the manner anticipated.
Firstly automation has indeed automated many blue collar roles and increasingly white collar ones too. Consequently those affected have more ‘leisure time’ though there will likely be a disparity in what they have and what they want from a material perspective.
The Redundancy Set is a rapidly growing club and membership has never been easier to obtain.
The second reality is that the digital economy has boosted the demand for people with creative skills. In a (developed) world comprising mainly process workers, such people are in great demand.
Such digital economy artists will be needed across all sectors, their role being largely associated with market disruption and enhancing the customer experience.
And because these artists are doing it primarily to improve their art / seek mastery their focus will not be on money. Nor will it be on work-life balance.
Consequently the Leisure Age has arrived, if you are an artist. The convergence of work and life in the pursuit of higher endeavours unshackled by economic constraints is the essence of 24-7 leisure.
The Leisure set is a private club. There are four rules for membership:
- You are passionate about what you do.
- You are good at what you do.
- There is a demand for what you do.
- Computers cannot do what you do.
You will most likely join one of these clubs in the foreseeable future. One you have to proactively apply for. The other requires no effort at all. Your call.
