BYWS – Bring Your Whole Self
I recently had the privilege of addressing the leadership team of the IT department of one of the largest companies in the UK. My topic was entitled ‘Towards IT Mastery’. The major themes were:
- Macroeconomic and tech trends.
- Strategic relevance.
- And of course mastery.
In respect of mastery I focused on the need to be passionate in respect of the service one delivers.
Speaking to one of the technical architects afterwards, she pointed out that she felt relieved that the world of work was changing. Having to suppress one’s personality or even gender (for 50% of the population) gets in the way of doing great work. Being passionate fundamentally means bringing your whole self to work rather than just the professional ‘corporate approved’ veneer.
Leaders need to recognise this and set the cultural transformation wheels in motion. Over time the best talent will gravitate to environments conducive to the pursuit of mastery.
