Consumerisation of Risk
User technologies are increasingly driving enterprise technology direction. I have been advocating for some time that the IT function raises its service game. My logic being that running a 5 star IT function with a 1 star reception makes the IT function a 1 star service.
But users are becoming used to cheap apps with no service support. They are taking service matters into their own hands by using their social networks to resolve issues.
So as the consumerisation of IT starts to erode the IT function’s value proposition, it may be time to proactively reduce the service provided.
Ultimately business leaders need to understand the relationship between value, cost and risk in respect of IT. Beyond a certain point, service has to slide if budget is sliding too. The key question is whether the organisation has the stomach for the associated risk.
