Digital disruption
CIOs often complain the pressure they are under to deliver more with less budget. Of course this a reality that the whole business faces so any associated whining usually receives short shrift.
But what if the CIO revisits her own IT function and reflects on what radical action can be taken to drive out more cost and also more risk? The use of third party suppliers with better economies of scale and suitably elastic capacity would be a good start.
Handing over your application developers and analysts to the relevant business units would kill shadow IT in one fell swoop.
Now the money that is saved from this IT function disruption, the CIO can now spend on digital disruption initiatives in respect of the business.
The bottom line is that most CIOs need to radically move away from the typical budgetary allocation of 90% ‘run the business’ and 10 % ‘grow / change the business’.
