e-Skills: Don’t fear outsourcing

I think there needs to be clarity on what an IT job is. Traditionally we think technologist, increasingly we think power user. No doubt there will be a shift as jobs go off shore. More significantly the high total cost of ownership of the data centre will drive technology innovation to obviate the need for technologists. The latter is the threat to be most conscious of.

Taking the new definition of IT jobs, a recent study by IDC on behalf of Microsoft showed that in 5 years time only 10% of the jobs in the EU will NOT require ICT skills. This is positive if you happen to have the right skills.
