I meet many CIOs who believe that IT is core to their business because without it the business wouldn't survive.

They often think again when it is pointed out that there are not so many Chief Electricity Officers on the boards of the FTSE 100 or Fortune 500.

However it is true that information and more specifically how it is utilised is core. That is why we need more genuine Chief Information Officers.
