Mobility – Is IT missing the point?
The IT industry thinks it understands mobility. Byod, MDM, apps etc. But it doesn’t.
Knowledge management died a death in the nineties because it was hijacked by the IT industry, when it was in fact a people issue with a technology element.
The same is true of mobility. Of course there is a device element but the real issue is about the mobility of people, in particular where they work and where they roam. Man’s brain is wired to be a wandering nomad.
Technology has enabled this, but the associated issues and opportunities are much bigger than IT.

Maybe BYOD is something of a myth. Many corporates are reacting to the desire of staff to choose their own device by making a wider range of devices available through corporate channels. Also we might expect a rearguard defence by Blackberry.

Thanks Ben. I have come across the COPE (Corporately Owned Personally Enabled) model.
For me the cultural and process issues around mobility rather than devices are where the opportunities lie for the CIO.
