Step back. They’re account managers!
When someone introduces themselves as your account manager does it fill you with:
- A – Dread. They won’t let you leave the room until you have taken at least one step deeper into their sales pipeline.
- B – Joy. This organisation cares enough to allocate someone to ensure my customer experience is a positive one.
Personally the terms account manager, business development director or sales executive on a business card cause me to escalate to commercial Defcon 1 and remain on peak alertness until the threat has subsided (usually when the person has left or just after their fiscal quarter has ended).
The digital economy, through increased connectedness of both technology and people, is resulting in increased customer empowerment. Job titles that reflect the interests of the seller over those of the buyer are no longer fit for purpose.
