Tech firm: The death of enterprise databases
Enterprise databases thrive because enterprises need to store stuff for retrieval at some point in the future. Gather enough data and you can even extract insights from your ‘big data’. But there are a couple of trends that are going to likely change the enterprise database market.
- Firstly as organisations increasingly outsource their IT and their business processes, the need for the enterprise to buy its own database licences disappears.
- Secondly as consumers begin to realise the value of their own personal data they may decide to manage their own data including that data associated with interactions with your organisation.
For those that sell enterprise databases, there will be a real temptation to squeeze the last drops out of this dying revenue stream by hiking up prices or locking customers into unnaturally long contracts.
However if you are serious about staying relevant in the digital economy you would be best focusing on building trust with the buyers rather than holding them by the ankles and shaking the remaining coins out of their pockets.
