What is a system of cognition?

Systems of cognition are the sociotechnical systems through which an organisation interprets information, generates insight, learns and makes decisions. They combine people, AI, data, knowledge and governance to transform information into organisational intelligence. Building on systems of record, they enable the organisation to sense its environment, decide how best to respond and coordinate effective action.

Traditional organisations rely primarily on systems of record to capture and manage operational data. Intelligent organisations augment these with systems of cognition that continuously interpret what the data means, identify emerging patterns and opportunities, and support better decision-making. In doing so, they transform data from a historical record into a strategic capability.
