What is Transformation?

Transformation is the process of changing from one state to another. In organisational terms, it typically refers to a planned transition from an existing operating model to one that is better aligned with strategic objectives or changing market conditions. Common forms include business transformation, digital transformation and, increasingly, AI transformation.

Traditional transformation assumes that the future state can be designed in advance and reached through a planned programme of change. Intelligent organisations recognise that this assumption becomes increasingly fragile in uncertain and rapidly changing environments. If the destination cannot be accurately defined, or is likely to change before it is reached, a large-scale transformation programme may optimise the organisation for yesterday's future.

Rather than relying on periodic transformation initiatives, intelligent organisations build adaptiveness into their operating model. Continuous sensing, decision-making and learning enable the organisation to evolve as part of its normal operation, reducing the need for infrequent, disruptive transformations.
