What is a Chief AI Officer?

A Chief AI Officer (CAIO) is a senior executive responsible for shaping and coordinating an organisation’s strategy, governance and deployment of artificial intelligence. The role can encompass AI investment priorities, governance, risk, capability development, technology choices, operating models and the integration of AI into products, processes and decision-making.

The emergence of the Chief AI Officer reflects the growing strategic significance of AI. It also creates a potential paradox: as AI becomes embedded across every function, responsibility for using it effectively cannot ultimately remain concentrated in a single executive role.

For the Intelligent Organisation, the deeper objective is therefore not simply to appoint a Chief AI Officer, but to develop the organisation-wide capability to combine human and machine cognition in ways that improve Sense-Decide-Act performance.
