What is a Chief Digital Officer?

A Chief Digital Officer (CDO) is a senior executive responsible for accelerating an organisation’s adoption of digital technologies, business models and ways of working. The role commonly emerged where established technology functions were considered insufficient to drive organisation-wide digital transformation.

Responsibilities may include digital customer experience, digital products and services, platform strategies, transformation programmes and organisational change. As digital capability becomes increasingly embedded throughout the organisation, the boundaries between the Chief Digital Officer, Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer and business leadership can become blurred.

From an Intelligent Organisation perspective, digital transformation is ultimately valuable when it enhances the organisation’s ability to Sense, Decide and Act. The objective is therefore not digitalisation itself, but greater organisational intelligence, responsiveness and adaptiveness.
