What is a Chief Operating Officer (COO)?

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is the executive responsible for the organisation's day-to-day operations. Traditionally, the role focuses on ensuring that products and services are delivered efficiently, consistently and profitably by overseeing operational processes, resources and performance.


As organisations become more adaptive and AI-enabled, the COO's role is expanding beyond operational efficiency. Increasingly, it involves designing operating models that can respond rapidly to changing circumstances, integrating people, technology and AI, by enabling the organisation to sense, decide and act more effectively.


In an Intelligent Organisation, the COO is a steward of organisational viability, ensuring that the enterprise can reliably deliver value today while continuously adapting to the demands of tomorrow.
