What is Cognitive efficiency?

Cognitive efficiency is the extent to which an organisation converts information, attention and intelligence into effective decisions and action with minimal wasted effort. A cognitively efficient organisation directs attention towards what matters, gets relevant information to the right people or systems, makes decisions at an appropriate level and translates those decisions rapidly into coordinated action.

Low cognitive efficiency can arise from information overload, excessive meetings, duplicated analysis, unclear decision rights, organisational silos and repeated reconsideration of decisions.

Within the Intelligent Organisation, cognitive efficiency concerns the effectiveness of the organisation’s Sense-Decide-Act capability. It is not simply about thinking faster; it is about reducing the organisational effort, delay and complexity involved in turning cognition into purposeful action.
