What is People management?

People management is the set of practices involved in attracting, developing, supporting and retaining people so they can contribute effectively to organisational goals. It includes recruitment, performance, development, wellbeing and day-to-day leadership.

Traditional organisations often approach people management as a function of resource allocation and performance control. The emphasis is on supervision, compliance and ensuring that people fulfil predefined roles within the organisational machine.

Intelligent organisations see people management as the process of creating the conditions in which individuals and teams can thrive, learn and contribute at their fullest potential. The emphasis shifts from supervision to enablement, from control to trust, and from managing people to growing human capability.
