What is Resilience?

Resilience is the capacity to absorb disruption and recover. Resilience is valuable in a storm or when enduring extreme physical stress. You endure it, knowing that it will soon come to an end. Most importantly, you bounce back quickly without trauma.

Intelligent organisations go beyond resilience because continuous disruption means that there is no end in sight. The storm, if anything, is going to get worse.

The term antifragility already exists to describe the phenomenon of turning stress into strength, but it has not gained traction as a term. We prefer the term super-resilience as this captures the antifragility element and the reality that disruption is not an occasional event that happens between extended periods of calm.
