What is a Foundation model?
A foundation model is an AI model trained on very large and diverse datasets so that it can perform, or be adapted to perform, a wide range of tasks. Rather than being built for one narrowly defined purpose, it develops broad capabilities that can provide the foundation for applications such as language generation, image creation, analysis and decision support.
Within an intelligent organisation, foundation models provide reusable cognitive infrastructure. They can be adapted, connected to organisational data and combined with other technologies to augment how people and AI actors sense, decide and act. Their value lies not simply in the model itself, but in how effectively its capabilities are applied within the organisation.
It is a key element of the organisation’s system of cognition.
