What is a multi-agent system?

A multi-agent system is a system in which multiple autonomous or semi-autonomous agents interact to pursue individual or shared objectives. Each agent can sense relevant information, make decisions and act, whilst co-ordinating, cooperating or negotiating with other agents as required. The agents may be AI systems, people or a combination of both.


Within an intelligent organisation, multi-agent systems enable cognitive activity to be distributed across a network rather than concentrated in a single system or decision-maker. They can coordinate complex work, combine specialised capabilities and respond dynamically to changing conditions. Their effectiveness depends on clear objectives, appropriate governance and mechanisms that ensure the actions of individual agents remain aligned with the interests of the wider organisation and ecosystem.


Agentic AI is a key element in the organisation’s system of cognition.
